Batra
Hospital & Medical Research Center, New delhi has always
been at the forefront of bringing new medical technology for
patient care. In its latest initiative for women's health
care, Batra Hospital introduced a breakthrough technology
of the 21st century medical advancement in women's health
care in 2006 in the introduction of Non-Surgical treatment
of uterine fibroids & uterine adenomyosis using Uterine
Artery Embolization. after successfully performing the largest
number of Uterine Artery Embolization for fibroid in entire
country, Dr. Pradeep Muley M.D., Head & Senior Consultant
Interventional Radiologist at Batra Hospital conducted a scientific
session for gynecologist & general practitioners at Batra
Hospital & Medical Research Center Auditorium, New Delhi.
Dr Muley explained that Uterine Fibroids are the most frequent
non cancerous tumors of the uterous and approximately 20-25
million Indian Women are at risk, during their childbearing
age.
Depending on location, size and number of fibroids, they
may cause -heavy, prolonged menstrual periods & unusual
bleeding with clots. They usually leads to anemia. Lower abdominal,
back or leg pain, lower abdominal pressure or heaviness, bladder
pressure leading to a constant urge to urinate, pressure on
bowl leading to constipation and bloating and abnormally enlarged
abdomen are other pressure symptoms.
"Uterine Artery Embolization" to treat fibroids
without surgery is a new kind of treatment. This new approach
has many advantages like it is performed under local anesthesia,
requires only a tiny nick in the skin (No surgical incision
of abdomen), recovery is shorter than existing traditional
surgery, all fibroids are treated at one sitting, no recurrent
growth of treated fibroids. Uterine fibroid embolization involves
virtually no blood loss or risk of blood tranfusion. Emotionally,
financially and physically, embolization can have an overall
advantage over other procedures for the patient, as the uterus
is not removed.
The Scientific session was conducted under guidance of Dr
Maheshwari sharma, Medical Director of Batra Hospital and
was greatly appreciated by senior gynecologists & general
practitioners of North India. They said that this procedure
is also very helpful for high risk patients who are unfit
for surgery due to various reasons like high blood pressure,
obesity, chronic failure and diabetes mellitus. In addition,
it is also beneficial to those patients who strongly want
to preserve their uterus and wish to avoid major uterine surgery
like hysterectmy.
